SCOLIOSIS IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AND AROUND THE WORLD.

What can I say?I guess scoliosis it’s just taking part of many people around the world and nobody cares. What can I do?Scoliosis isn’t even seriously from where I am from. How can I help? If they say people with scoliosis are weird and they start to make them feel awkward.

I got a diagnosis of scoliosis in 2020, it wasn’t easy and it’s not easy… I am Dominican. Yes, borned and raised in the Dominican Republic until I turned 15 years old and maybe my mind is from another world but sometimes I don’t even feel like most of the people there, maybe I just growed up in the wrong environment or who knows? Maybe the world needs to change, maybe everyone deserves to be listened to, and honestly that’s the only truth.

After getting my diagnosis a lot of things changed inside of me, one of them was to start thinking more as an adult… Just imagine the prices of the surgery especially in my country oh my gosh it’s literally so crazy.

I asked my doctor when he said “you need the surgery” how much is gonna be? He said don’t worry about having expensive and private insurance. I’m just gonna say it’s too much money, so that’s what he said. Since that moment I started to think about the price and last year I started talking to my psychologist about it, he said in this hospital we do like a give to 10-11 kids per year, we do the surgery to these kids who doesn’t have enough money or resources to pay giving them the hope they can have what’s it’s called a “normal life”.

I was looking for information and based on the statistics the amount of money to pay for the surgery in the Dominican Republic is basically 15,000,000.00 dollars. Here with your insurance you don’t even have to pay and also even if not a lot of people know about scoliosis around the world I’m still trying to be focused in my country.

I did an interview to some familiars and also to some particulars their answers were basically the same, honestly I didn’t get surprise, it’s not their fault, in my country there some many ignorant people about this topic, a lot of Dominican people doesn’t even know what’s scoliosis , for them if they see you and you have scoliosis they call you “ugly, weird” or how they says in spanish “torcido”. People always will say it’s your fault when they know what’s going on, but this is why I am here.

Maybe and hopefully someone from Dominican Republic have the opportunity to get this information, but I want to my voice and all the voices with scoliosis be listened to, because we deserve to be listened to, just let’s try how many kids are over there, outside crying because of the pain and the bullying the get for a medical condition they didn’t choose, that’s ridiculous. This is why I think the government in the Dominican Republic should help people with this traumatic condition, because if a person with good insurance is free to get the surgery, why would someone with the same human rights not be free to get the surgery especially when it’s an emergency.

Taking back when I did the interview I noticed anyone know what’s scoliosis so I started to look more information, I realized more than 10,000 of kids get affected of scoliosis in Dominican Republic especially when they’re in school, this information based on a researching of UNPHU, what it means Universidad Nacional Pedro Enriques Urena, in the sciences area.

I found something that really caught my attention and most of the people realized they have scoliosis at the age 12-14, even if the scoliosis had years trying to get shown as mine, I realized by myself when I was 14, nobody paid attention to me until the age 15.

I just want to say, if you can do a monthly check on your body by yourself, if you can support someone with scoliosis do it, if you have a kid, family member with scoliosis go to the doctor with that person before it gets late or literally too late.

If you can do a donation to the hospitals with kids that are suffering do it, maybe it’s not that all but even $1 dollar can help to save a life, because yes, once scoliosis starts taking your body you don’t even know if you will be alive tomorrow or not, if you can do a donation to someone to pay the rehabilitation do it.

you can be the angel of someone there. And remember scoliosis is not a decision, it’s a condition you learn to live with.

Wherever you’re from remember ALL BODIES ARE GOOD BODIES AND EVERYONE DESERVES TO BE LISTENED TO.
